Whitnall High School's Science Department is hosting a screening of the film Particle Fever. The film gives audiences a front row seat to a significant scientific breakthrough as it happens. Particle Fever shows the launch of the biggest and most expensive experiment in the history of the planet, pushing the edge of human innovation.
Physicists and graduate students from the Wisconsin Icecube Particle Astrophysics Center in Madison will share their expertise on how invisible particles can provide a deeper understanding of the universe. The night is dedicated to learning about neutrinos, nearly massless particles without electrical charge that can travel from the edges of the universe in an uninterrupted path. Neutrinos are excellent cosmic messengers, but they are elusive and hard to detect.
Prior to the screening, there will be activities including interactive games, computer simulations, and ice drilling. There will also be South Pole winter gear to try on and get your picture taken with.
Childcare will be offered.
