Last week was generally busy at the South Pole. The first LC-130 of the season arrived, staying long enough to offload its contents and then reload with cargo to take back to McMurdo. You can see the IceCube Lab off in the distance below, between the snow tractor and the plane. Last week also happened to be the annual South Pole head weighing contest, one of the newer traditions to take hold at the Pole (they love their traditions). No photos from this year’s contest, but a nice XKCD-style graphic that clearly explains the basics of the event. Some of the spotters, from the South Pole traverse or “SPOT,” tried their hand at kite-skiing before leaving and returning to McMurdo last week.
