It’s a small community wintering over at the South Pole—they help each other out. When not immediately involved in their detector duties, IceCube’s winterovers might be found volunteering their assistance with other scientific projects. Here they’re helping take down a large mirror that belongs to the Keck Array, a powerful radio telescope that runs in coordination with another South Pole telescope, the BICEP2, which recently announced the discovery of direct evidence for cosmic inflation. Serious stuff, but the mirror itself has its lighthearted side, too, giving Dag two noses in this fun house image.
