Week 48 at the Pole
Some of the long-awaited cargo arrived at the Pole last week, allowing delayed projects, like upgrading servers in the ICL, to get underway. The ICL was a busy place, with snow vehicles, large crates, and crews standing at the ready, prepared to open and distribute the crates’ contents. Perhaps just as (or more?) exciting, the South Pole traverse arrived last week, shown above. The traverse travels overland to bring more than 100,000 gallons of fuel to the South Pole that would otherwise need to be flown in (we’ve talked about the traverses before). IceCube winterover John got to check out the view from the driver’s seat of one of the traverse’s tractors.
