Week 33 at the Pole
You never know which aurora images from the Pole will be the last of the season. But if it’s this week’s images, then this year’s aurora season is clearly going out with a bang. On a recent trip out to the IceCube Lab (ICL), IceCube’s winterovers got to experience a sky full of giant, dancing auroras. In the top image, you can even make out a blue component above the magenta band in the aurora. In the next image, we see the actual “commute” from the station to the ICL—an enviable commute indeed. And when your task is done, why not take a break on a large snowdrift to marvel at the skies before trekking back to the station? They found some other things to photograph on their journey, including the dish of the South Pole Telescope up close and a pair of very frosty and snow-swept drill towers.
At the end of the week, the station was engrossed in their Iron Chef competition. IceCube winterovers John and Yuya’s team won! Their mystery ingredient, miso, was revealed only half an hour before the competition. But they came up with some great creations, including Korean pancakes and miso-caramel ice cream with miso brittle.
