Week 28 at the Pole

It looks as if the smoke stacks are releasing a plume of green smoke along with their stream of exhaust, but it’s just an artifact of the camera angle. The green splash across the sky reminds us that it’s still aurora season at the South Pole. But the power plant operation is definitely not a seasonal thing—that’s an all-the-time operation. An interruption in power station activity could be a serious incident at any time but especially during the isolated winter months. After all, you can’t heat the station with sushi rolls, although you can fuel up the winterovers that way.
