The job of IceCube winterover at the South Pole entails a range of skills. After all, the winterovers are charged with on-site operation and maintenance tasks for a large neutrino detector, requiring experience with aspects of high-performance computing hardware as well as with standard laboratory equipment. But they also participate in a variety of activities outside of detector work, and they live in a small, isolated community during these winter months, with no supplies coming in. It helps to be handy and versatile, since they have to make do with what they have on hand—if they need a new tool, they craft it, or if something breaks (or rips), they fix it. If an omelet appears, well … they photograph it.
